Everyone farts. Though it is quite a bizarre question to ask, but a person who does not fart might be suffering from an underlying medical condition and has to pay a visit to the doctor for consultation as soon as possible. Farts are the result of flatulence. Flatulence is the accumulation of gas in the digestive system (the digestive tract, stomach, colon, rectum and small intestine) as well as the release of intestinal gas. When food is digested in our body, certain gases (hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide) are released. Sometimes, hydrogen sulphide is also formed and this gas is the cause of bad odour.   4. Travelling by Airplanes (Changes in the sound and air pressure can also result in flatulence)

  5. Underlying medical conditions (Medical conditions such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, malabsorption and lactose intolerance

  6. Old age (Body unable to produce adequate digestive juice due to old age, thus leading to the condition of flatulence)

  7. Pregnancy (Hormonal activity)

  8. Antibioitics Usage

Controlling flatulence

Certain measures can be taken to avoid excessive accumulation of gas. These measures are:

  1. Maintaining proper and balanced healthy diet

  2. Chewing food slowly and properly

  3. Have smaller meals rather than having heavy meals

  4. Keeping body hydrated (drinking water at regular intervals)

  5. Avoid smoking, drinks (carbonated ones) and chewing gums

  6. Exercise daily

  7. Probiotics (these help improve the gut bacteria balance)

Home remedies for flatulence

Certain home remedies that can be helpful in reducing flatulence are:

  1. Carom seeds (Ajwain)

  2. Asafoetida (Heeng)

  3. Apple cider vinegar

  4. Ginger

  5. Buttermilk

  6. Lime Water With Baking Powder
