Why do I have to burp so often?

Burping is the process of expulsion of excessive air from the digestive tract. This excess air accumulates in the upper digestive tract, mainly the oesophagus. Belch is another term used, other than burp, when air is expelled from the mouth. The process of belching or burping helps provide comfort to an upset stomach. But too much burping or belching can be the sign of a health problem.

Causes of burping

The common causes of burping are swallowing air and consumption of carbonated beverages. The excess air or gas thus is trapped in the oesophagus and later approaches upwards. This excess air or gas is released from the mouth.

Excessive air can be swallowed and burping may result when:

  • There is eating of chewing gum.
  • Smoking (During smoking, smoke is inhaled and is trapped thus leading to the process of burping)
  • Eating too quickly (Consuming food hurriedly may lead to swallowing air thus resulting in burping)
  • Consuming hard candies by sucking (While sucking candies, air may be swallowed thus leading to the condition of burping)
  • Dentures are used but they do not fit properly, thus air may be swallowed.

Other causes of burping or belching are:

  • Consuming food items that are rich in fat and oil
  • Consuming drinks with caffeine and alcohol
  • Any underlying medical condition related to the digestive problems (For example: Gastroparesis (delayed emptying of stomach), peptic ulcer disease (ulceration of the mucosal lining of the stomach), gallstones (stone in gall bladder or bile duct), gall bladder problems, carcinoma of stomach and carcinoma of oesophagus)
  • Heartburn (Burping or belching is commonly associated with this condition)

Reducing burping or belching

Certain measures can be taken to reduce the condition of excessive burping or belching. These measures are:

  • Maintaining a proper and balanced diet
  • Consuming food slowly as to avoid swallowing air
  • Drinking slowly as to avoid swallowing air
  • While chewing food, avoid talking

  • Reduce the consumption of carbonated drinks and beer
  • Avoid using straws
  • Stop smoking

The condition of heartburn should be treated. Take antacids or proper medicine for the same by consulting a doctor
