1. What would you call the Turning point in your life (How did the idea of getting into this field come about? What made you choose this? And what would you say sets you apart?
Actually, I had an inborn problem that was haematophobia. But my aim from childhood is TO SERVE PEOPLE FOR THEIR WELLBEING. So, I knew that I wouldn't be a doctor. Then got to know about the existence of NUTRITION. I was curious. My mom told me "dieticians are equivalent to doctors and they recommend foods" .From then, my journey begins. One more turning point was when my dad explained about the importance of Nutritionist in community as he was in Nutrition and Social Welfare department, Government of West Bengal (although I didn't know all about policies of that department before). Then I stuck to one point, I would be the Community Nutritionist and Clinical Dietitian to cover the both area. Once I was afraid of blood, injection, injury, death and today I am working in critical care. Thus, have completed M.sc in Food and Nutrition and M.A in Social Work and now pursuing PhD in critical care nutrition.
2. In layman’s terms could you please tell me what is it that you do as a nutritionist ?
Without our mothers ' nutrition, we couldn't form. And nutritionists stretch the nourishing path of one's life. India is one of the malnourished country in the world. Nutritionists are the mentors to eradicate this pathetic situation. They are basically the health workers for the society as society is infectious with diseases and infirmities. They will understand you, your life style, eating behaviors, clinical conditions, socio-economic background and recommend the proper and easily accessible, affordable foods to you. Their mission is to create healthier society.
3. What do you like most about what you are doing?
The blessings I get from patients and patient parties. Dietary advices can not be scripted. So, individualized dietary guidelines and menu plans are recommended from our end. When the patient gets the solution about what to eat and gain the clear idea how to maintain a balance, the smiling faces of them make me the happiest soul. I think, if we work for others' happiness, it pays off and returns to us in a bigger way. If I can help an ill person with my knowledge then what more I want? These happy hours made my day.
4. What is your definition of Success?
A successful life is all about the maintenance of a balanced life and creating good memories to cherish. Yes, success stories in each stage, each section of life are important. For me , success is being the reason of another's happiness. In professional life, my success stories are yet to come. My thought is if one success satisfies you, then real success doesn't meet you ever. One of my success story is, I lost my consciousness in the first day of internship after seeing critically ill patients, and today I am handling the most critical patients of the same hospital.
5. If you had to give a advice to your younger self when you were starting out, what would it be or If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?
Many students are not studious but have the tenacity to do something extraordinary. Important is honesty and authenticity. If your profession is handled by your passion , no barrier can break your determination. And one more thing I want to suggest, (although I am no one to say these heavy words) try to set your rules rather principles of work along with honoring others. You know best about your potentialities so make it worthy. In our profession, we face many quacks, we have to bit it with our knowledge, determination and wisdom. I wanted to be a dietician and today I am here. I want to do exceptional activities for the survival of commons and it is the most fitted profession I guess. Time will speak the rest.
6. Any regrets as of now? And if yes would you like to share
I don't regret, I accept everything gladly and register as a lesson of my life.
7. Top 2 regular practices that have helped you
Having a balanced day in terms of professional and personal life raises my peacefulness. Secondly, regular learning from different courses of incidents makes me more efficient to handle everything tactfully. Learn, practice more and memorize the most- it helps me always.
8. Motivational factor (What keeps you motivated)
My progression from the first day to till date always inspires me to be involved into better endeavors. I don't run after ranks, I only enjoy the self satisfaction. Continous self counseling is helpful to detect the visible faults and invisible talents. Grooming sessions with myself is encouraging to love my life more.
9. One relationship that helped (Who has been your biggest support in this journey ?)
As I said, my parents introduced this subject individually , so they helped me to start the car. My professors from my college (honors) sketched the route, my tuition teachers explained the importance, professors from university gave the practical examples to be safe from any danger, during my second masters, subject taught me not to worry, gearing up to the summit of success. And I am driving.
10. What is the biggest misconception you think people have about you?
I am very conceptual person and really busy to follow and upgrade my concept. I don't really put any efforts to think about other people's misconceptions.
11. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Focused on your aim Dedicated to your activities Improvise your skills, thoughts during the assignments.
12. What would you have been if not what you are doing currently?
I wish I'd do the same thing but may be in different way or staying in different place. As, I am convent educated, social worker is inherited since childhood. So, I consider myself a social work who is spreading nutrition awareness which is the basic need of a life.
13. What qualifications are required to pursue this career
Yes, many spoilers are here in our field. Many think that it is an easy subject. But reality is , one should take science in higher secondary level (biology and chemistry are mandatory) then science graduate and post graduate with food, nutrition and dietetics are mandatory. Different Universities offer the subject with various names but it is an allied science subject. Afterwards, internships, RD(registration), certificate, diploma, M.phils, PhD are there to enrich yourself more. But one should check the affiliations and course details before admission.
14. What qualities are needed to pursue this career?
Still people have the notion, nutrition is a COOKING SUBJECT. But this subject consists of dietetics, food, medical, food technology, psychology, bio chemistry, micro biology, agriculture, sanitation, hygiene, public health, social work and so on. So one must choose his/her priorities like he wants to be professor in college, she wants to be dietician in hospital . You have to be very specific from the first as this is a broader subject . Secondly, this subject is related to help someone so you have to be very updated with recent researches, very polite and to the point while delivering your tips. And most importantly, if you love this subject , all can be done with an ease.
15. What courses are available in India if one wants to pursue this course?
Under Graduate, Post Graduate , Post Graduate Diploma, 6months certificate courses are available in India.I already said the basic criteria. Now a days all dieticians opt for specialization like doctors which are really mandatory. After post graduations, you can go for any certificate or diploma course for specialization( like sports nutrition, renal care, diabetes educator, critical care nutrition etc). But post graduation in Nutrition is must to be eligible as a Nutritionist or Dietitians. The affiliations of universities and institutions are also important because there are plenty of quack courses. And if we treat the common people in wrong way, then the respect of our profession gets diminished.
16. Any advice to parents whose kids may want to pursue this course?
Nutritionists are needed globally. Food is the ultimate medicine. This is one of the respected profession in the world. India has the prospect for them but still it is under construction. If more qualified persons come to join, then more health providers join together to create healthier world. If your child has the hunger to do something new, let them come into this field .One day, everybody will come to your child for consultation. Your child makes you proud. I guess all our parents already feel like same way.
