As you hit the sack at night after a tiring day you forget how you are sleeping. Only in the morning you wake up with a crick in the neck you realize the sleeping position might have been wrong. But no one realizes the importance of the sleeping positions and how they can affect the health. Let this article be an eye opener regarding the sleep positions.
SLEEPING ON YOUR SIDE:
It is considered a good position for sleep and overall health. Sleepers have less chances of snoring and apnea compared to back sleepers. And less risk of back and neck pain. Sleeping on the side can cut the risk of neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The body functions well as brain can easily remove its toxic wastes and prevent neurodegeneration.
Sleeping on the left side is beneficial for people with acid reflux problem. It is good for pregnant women as this position increases circulation and blood flow to the placenta.
Sleeping on the right side helps to lower nervous system activity which helps to reduce heart rate and blood pressure.
Left side sleeping yields more benefits as it helps in digestion, reduces heartburn preventing night time heartburn, improving drainage of lymphatic system, normal functioning of the heart, prevents Liver congestion,, boosts the functioning of the gut and helps to boost brain health. There are a few negatives of sleeping on the side like more face wrinkling, skin aging, tingling pain in the arm due to which more shifting during sleep.
To get rid of these problems while sleeping on the side, a big pillow should be used between the thighs to support the leg.
ON YOUR BACK:
This is a good position to sleep as it keeps the skin young and wrinkles at bay. Acne breakouts will be lessened with sleeping on the back. It will prevent acid reflux and neck pain. People with arthritis can sleep well on their back.
In this the spine is well aligned and the pressure on shoulder and jaw is alleviated reducing tension headaches. Back sleeping can help in reducing hip and knee pain. People suffering from sinus, bursitis and fibromyalgia can get a lot of relief.
A few cons with this position are increased snoring and apnea. Don’t use pillow in this position to allow head, neck and spine to relax naturally.
ON YOUR FRONT:
Sleeping on the stomach is not a very good sleeping position as it increases backache and neck pain. It may lead to more wrinkling as blood circulation is cut off from the face. It is only useful in reducing snoring. If it becomes a habit then sleepers should minimize the risk of neck and back pain by placing a thin, pillow on the forehead for neck and a second pillow under the pelvic area to support the back.
THE FETAL POSITION:
This sleeping position involves sleeping on the side with knees drawn towards the chest. Women prefer this position. This position helps in reducing snoring. It can help reduce acid reflux and is useful position for pregnant women. The only cons of sleeping in this position are more strain on neck and back which may cause neck pain and backache. It causes wrinkles and sagging breasts. But to minimize the problems while sleeping in this position is to use a firm pillow to support the head.
WITH A PARTNER:
Couples with a low backache should sleep with their sides facing away from each other. This is the spooning position and is helpful in alleviating pain.
Dreams are also associated with sleeping positions, it is seen that people sleeping on their right side experience less nightmares compared to people sleeping on their left side. People sleeping on their back also experience fewer nightmares compared to people sleeping on their stomach.
