How long the flu last?

Flu is a common viral infectious disease. This condition is spread by touch, coughs and sneezes (basically direct contact with the droplets). Flu is often confused with cold, but these two are different medical illnesses. The onset of symptoms of flu is abrupt and the symptoms are more severe in intensity and lasts longer in comparison to cold. The condition of flu last for about three to seven days.

The condition may lead to complications such as chest infection (first bronchitis then further develops into pneumonia), sinusitis, tonsillitis, meningitis, etc. Individuals who are more prone to develop these complications are old aged people, pregnant women, people suffering from chronic medical illnesses (diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, etc) and people with poor and weak immune system. The condition may complicate with commencement of symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness, or blood during cough.

Symptoms of flu

The symptoms that are associated with the condition of flu are:

  • Fever (Sudden onset, high grade fever 102-104°F and lasts for three to four days)
  • Headache (Appears suddenly, prominent and severe)
  • Muscle aches (Severe)
  • Pain (Severe)
  • Fatigue, Weakness (Severe and lasts for two to three weeks)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sneezing
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Prostration (Early and prominent)
  • Cough (Dry and sore throat, can become severe and lasts for weeks)
  • Chest discomfort (Can become severe and lasts for weeks with cough)
  • Chills

Controlling the symptoms of flu

Certain measures can be taken to control the condition of flu. These measures are:

  • Maintaining proper and healthy diet

  • Taking adequate rest

  • Avoid tension. Manage stress

  • Keeping warm

  • Keeping body hydrated by drinking adequate water

  • Anti-pyretic drugs can be taken (also anti-inflammatory drugs can also be considered)

Prevention for flu

Certain measures can be taken to prevent the condition of flu. These measures are:

  • Vaccination (Vaccines against flu are available)
  • Early treatment
  • Hygiene (Maintain proper and good hygiene by washing hands regularly, keeping surrounding clean, using a tissue or napkin to cover the mouth during sneezing or coughing and proper disposal of dirty tissues or napkins in the bin as soon as possible)
  • Antiviral medications (They can helpful when flu vaccination is not done)
  • High grade fever lasting more than 24 hours, then seek treatment

Home remedies for flu

Certain home remedies can be helpful in the condition of flu. These home remedies are:

  • Ginger

  • Cinnamon
  • Milk and turmeric
  • Honey-onion syrup
  • Garlic
